The Ars Vetus finish is completely innovative, the pride of Fornace Bernasconi. It is the result of continuous research in respect of materials and ancient traditions. It arises from the aesthetic and functional need to find a brick suitable for restoration of the Flavian amphitheater in Rome (Colosseum) : the superintendency was in search of the “perfect” brick. After a period of research we managed to find the right processing that wants to give the brick the desired characteristics. Treatments of a finishing vibration with aggregate exercise which is carried out after firing capable of giving the brick found and the flavor of a real brick lived , to the point of signaling indistinguishable to the more expert eye.

This type of processing also represents a sort of selection as the brick is subjected to high stresses for over 30 minutes: if the brick presents imperfections it would not overcome this stress and would break. The bricks that resist are sure that they are qualitatively perfect both in terms of firing and inert materials contained inside (calcinello). The result obtained is comparable to a recovery brick, uniformly worn by time and bad weather. The corners are slightly rounded and the surface is very smooth to the touch, velvety while keeping the characteristic imperfections of the handmade brick visible. Born for the need to restore an important historical structure, this finish has found more and more application over the years in the private market. Its charm is due to the exaltation of the material in its simplicity: the velvety and soft to the touch surface, the warm shades of brick paste color offer welcoming environments with both classic and extremely modern design. It is recommended both for the interior and for the exterior, as a floor or for masonry (columns, jambs, exposed walls, etc.): its flexibility is due to the fact that the workmanship affects all parts of the brick and not only one face. It can be treated with decorations and enamelling that give a touch of particularity to an already unique product and inimitable. Ars Vetus is a trademark registered by Fornace Bernasconi.
